  • Items on the special interest table

Purposes:

  • To help the child learn to express ideas clearly and in a logical sequence

  • To build self-confidence

  • A preparation for written composition (creative writing)

Age: 2 ½ and up

Preparation: None

Presentation Description:

Invite a small group to join you either at the place where the picture is on the wall or gather with the item to be discussed.  If you are at the wall, demonstrate how to point to the picture without touching it.  Initiate the conversation by asking the children what they see.  After they make their observations, the guide will provide some interesting information that is not seen (name of the artist, where the image came from…).  Let the children know they can share the information with a friend.  Bow out and let the children continue their examination of the picture or object.

Control of Error: None

Following Exercises: None

Pedagogical Notes:

  • The classroom should have art that is rotated regularly as well as a few permanent pieces. Framing the artwork is nice but not always necessary.

  • This is a back-and-forth conversation where both parties offer insight, opinions, and information. Do not lecture.

  • Keep a variety of interesting cultural items, including those from the cultural backgrounds of your students, in the classroom. Make sure you know a little about each item to share.
