Teen Boards
Materials:
Teen Boards (Seguin Boards) consisting of two boards with 5 spaces each
One board has 10 printed five times and the other has 10 printed four times with a blank space at the bottom
9 wooden cards with the numerals 1-9 printed on them - these slip into the slots of each space over the zeros of the tens.
A Rug
Purposes: To give the symbols and the names for the numbers 11-19
Age: 4 - 5
Preparation: The child must have experience with both following exercises of the Teen Beads
Parallel Work: The child will be working with the Decimal System
Presentation:
Invite the child for the lesson, to unroll a rug, bring the boards and the guide will bring the cards.
Lay the boards vertically, with the board containing the empty space on the bottom.
Review the numbers on the board.
One by one, randomly lay the numbers on the rug.
With two hands, restack them in order and place them at the top right corner of the rug upside-down.
Point to ten and say, “Ten and one.. (slide in the 1 on the right) is eleven.”
Point to the next ten, “Ten and two.. (slide in the 2 on the right) is twelve.”
Repeat for 13.
Offer a Three-period lesson for 11, 12, 13. Including sliding out the cards and creating the numbers in your second period commands.
Do three more if the child is interested and even three more after that. Isolate the new three you are introducing by removing the cards from the previous numbers. Present the new cards in their appropriate number slot.
Note: The child may understand 17-19 when you show them because they have picked up on the pattern.
Control of Error: None. The child’s knowledge of the written number sequence of 1-9 will guide them.
Following Exercises:
Extended Second Period: The guide will dictate the numbers in random order. The child will build them top at random. This will help the child from using the sequence as a crutch.
Extended Third Period: The guide builds the numbers in random order and the child identifies them
Pedagogical Notes:
Both following exercises must be done before the child moves to the Teen Boards and Beads
11,12,13,15 are the numbers that do not follow the “teen” pattern and will need extra time and repetition to learn.
