How to Carry a Pitcher

Materials: A Pitcher of Water  (¾ full)

Purposes:

  • Independence

  • Coordination of Movement

  • Preliminary Exercise

Age: 2 ½ and up

Preparation: None

Presentation:

  • Invite a small group to the lesson.

  • “Today I am going to show you how to carry a pitcher.”

  • Stand in front of the table with the pitcher.

  • Grasp the handle with one hand and support the belly of the pitcher with the other.

  • Lift the pitcher.

  • Lift pitcher to waist level and carry to a table.

  • Lower the pitcher.

  • Return to the presentation area.

  • “Please move the pitcher back to the table, Sally.”

  • Continue for the rest of the children in the group.

  • Once the Pitcher is back at the table, “Now you know how to carry a pitcher.  This pitcher will be on the special interest table for the next few days if you would like to practice carrying it.” 

  • Dismiss to work.

Points of Interest:

  • Supporting the pitcher with both hands.

  • Carrying the pitcher without a spill.

  • Setting it down quietly.

Following Exercises:

  • Carrying a pitcher of varying sizes.
