Picking Up a Fallen Object

Materials: The fallen item

Purposes:

  • Independence

  • Preparation for Culturally Appropriate Social Behavior

Age: 3 - 6

Preparation: None

Presentation:

  • Invite a small group and one child expert, bring chairs, and sit.

  • The child expert sits at a table.

  • Explain that you will show them what to do if they see that someone has dropped something.

  • The student at the table pushes a pencil off the table.

  • Walk by, pick up the pen and place it on the table, “Excuse me (child name), you dropped this.”

  • Child expert responds with, “Thanks”.

  • Respond with “You’re welcome” and walk away.

  • Return and switch with the child expert.

  • Repeat the presentation.

  • Invite each of the other children to play the role of the one who drops and the one who picks up.

  • Summarize the lesson and dismiss the children to work.
