Word Problems

Materials:      

  • Prepared sets of cards that have stories or scenarios asking a question about arithmetic 

  • One set for each operation and one mixed set

Purposes: Verification of the concepts of the operations of the decimal system

Age: 4 ½ and on

Preparation:  The child has had experience with the corresponding operation through stamp game.  

Presentation: 

  • Invite the child to the lesson and to select a set of problems.

  • Have the child take one and read it. Ask them how they will solve the problem.

  • It is up to the child to determine what operation it requires and what materials that they would like to use.

Control of Error:  None

Pedagogical Notes:

  • Colored paper can be used to key the child into the operation (Red for addition, green for subtraction, yellow for multiplication, blue for division).

  • This exercise is the test.

  • The child is applying their understanding of the operations it to the real world.
