Word Problems
Materials:
Prepared sets of cards that have stories or scenarios asking a question about arithmetic
One set for each operation and one mixed set
Purposes: Verification of the concepts of the operations of the decimal system
Age: 4 ½ and on
Preparation: The child has had experience with the corresponding operation through stamp game.
Presentation:
Invite the child to the lesson and to select a set of problems.
Have the child take one and read it. Ask them how they will solve the problem.
It is up to the child to determine what operation it requires and what materials that they would like to use.
Control of Error: None
Pedagogical Notes:
Colored paper can be used to key the child into the operation (Red for addition, green for subtraction, yellow for multiplication, blue for division).
This exercise is the test.
The child is applying their understanding of the operations it to the real world.
