Classified Picture Books

Materials:

  • Classified picture books (pictures, no text) can be either hand-made or commercial

Purposes:

  • To help the child learn to express ideas clearly and in a logical sequence

  • To build self-confidence

  • A preparation for written composition (creative writing)

Age: 2 ½ and up

Preparation: None

Presentation Description: 

Show the child how to carry the book and invite them to take it to the table.  Show the child how to turn the pages with care. Do a few and hand it over to the child.  Move away and allow the child to look through the book.  

Do not discuss the picture or initiate conversation at this time simply allow the child to look at the book.  Later on, or another day, sit with the child and engage the child in a conversation about what we see in the pictures.

Pedagogical Notes:

  • These books are created according to some theme/classification.  

  • Children can easily relate to action-type themes such as nighttime routines, getting ready for school, etc. 

  • Try to have the books 8-12 pages in length.

  • How to handle a book is a great lesson to start the year with. 

  • These can spark interest in books for the child. 

  • These books are unintimidating for the non-reader. 

  • These books provide a great opportunity for conversations to occur.
