Subtraction Charts II and III (Blank)

Materials:     

  • Subtraction Charts II and III (Blank)

  • A container for each chart with all the combinations of subtraction 

  • Booklets of squared paper

  • Pencils and pencil holders

  • A green box marked with a ‘-’ sign for use with the Blank Chart - inside are tiles with an answer printed in green for all the subtraction combinations

Purposes:   To memorization of the essential subtraction combinations through repetition.

Age: 5 – 6 ½ 

Preparation:  Chart II: The child has worked with the Subtraction Strip Board.

Chart III:  The child has worked with Chart II.

Presentation 1:  Chart II 

  1. Invite the child and bring the chart and tray to the table.

  2. Child writes their name on their book.

  3. Randomly select a problem and read it aloud with the child.

  4. Model how to find the answer: Example 11-3= .  Place a right finger on 11, left on -3 verbalizing as you place the fingers.  

  5. Move one finger at a time.  Example: left finger slides in its row to the column under the right finger.  The right finger slides down until they meet.

  6. Have the child Recite and write the equation.

  7. Place the equation slip in the box lid.

  8. Transfer to the child to do in this way.  When the page is full, have the child use the check chart.

  9. The child will recite the equation when they find it and recite what they have in their book.

Presentation 2: Chart III

  1. Invite the child to bring the board, problems, and the green box of tiles to the table. 

  2. Removing the tiles one at a time, line them up 0-9 along the top of the table, and place multiples in columns below their corresponding number. 

  3. Pull a problem and read it with the child.  Ask if they know the answer.

  4. Have the child place their fingers and slide as they would in Chart II.  

  5. The answer tile is placed where the fingers meet.  Suggest they leave a finger on the square so the spot doesn’t get forgotten.

  6. When the child reaches a problem they do not know the answer to, they will verbally repeat the equation as they walk to the Control Chart, find the answer, return to the table repeating the equation and place the tile.

  7. When the board is complete, bring Chart II to use as the control.
