Multiplication Charts III, IV, and V (Blank)

Materials:

  • Multiplication Charts III, IV, and V (Blank)

  • A container for each chart with all the combinations of multiplication

  • Booklets of squared paper

  • Pencil

  • A yellow box marked with the “x” sign for use with the Blank Chart - inside are tiles with an answer printed in yellow for all the combinations of multiplication

Purposes: To memorization the essential multiplication combinations through repetition

Age: 5 – 6 ½

Preparation:  The child has worked with the Multiplication Bead Board

Presentation 1:  Chart III

  • Invite the child for the lesson and to bring the materials.

  • Note to the child that they have seen a chart like this before.

  • Let the child pick a problem and read it.

  • Show the child to find the answer by placing a right finger on the blue multiplicand and left finger on the red multiplier and sliding them together one finger at a time

  • Invite the child to do it.

  • Child writes the problem and the answer while they say it.

  • Move the prepared slip aside and repeat.

  • When the child has done enough to be satisfied (encourage them to fill the whole page/booklet), have them verify with Multiplication Control Chart I, finding the equation, from the board and then from the paper.

  • Invite the child to continue or repeat.

Note: Any number times one will be the number on the top blue bar.  The only finger to move is the one on the one.

Control of Error:  Multiplication Chart 1

Presentation 2: Chart IV (Reflects the Commutative Law)

  • Invite the child to bring the board and you bring the tray.

  • Note to the child they have seen a board like this before.

  • Let the child pick a problem and read it.

  • Explain both fingers will be on red. Place right finger on the smaller number left finger on the larger number.

  • Slide top finger to the end of the row.

  • Slide bottom finger over until in the same column as top finger.

  • Slide top finger down to meet bottom finger.

  • Invite the child to do and record as they say the equation aloud.

  • Place slip to the side and repeat.

  • When the page is full, the child will use the Control Chart II to check their work. If the child cannot find the equations, prompt them to reverse the multiplier and the multiplicand.

Note: Be sure to show the child a x1.  The answer will be on the red bar

Control of Error: Multiplication Chart II

Presentation 3:  Chart V

  • Show the child how to set up the tiles along the top of the table units, then in columns of 10’s. Line up the same tiles in rows.

  • Ask what the child notices about the chart.  It is blank.  The child gets to make the board.

  • Let the child pick a problem and read it. Ask if they remember what the answer is.

  • Demonstrate how to slide the fingers to find the spot where the answer will go.

  • Let the child try and place the answer tile.

  • Place slip aside and repeat.

  • If the child doesn’t know the answer, ask them to repeat the problem aloud as they go to the Control Chart I.  They find the answer and repeat the entire equation aloud as they return to the table and place the tile.

  • We want them to fill the entire board.  To check their work, invite the child to get the Chart III.

Note: There will not be tiles for the 1x numbers

Control of Error:  Multiplication Chart III

Pedagogical Notes:

  • As the child lays out the number tiles for the blank chart, they will discover that there is not a tile for every number.

  • Demonstrate an example with a x1 because they are handled differently.

  • The x1 slips can be removed for Chart V because they are not represented on the blank chart.

  • Chart III is called the Pythagorean Chart.  Dr. Montessori adopted it and it served as an inspiration for the other charts.
