  • To help the child become aware that several adverbs can go with a verb.

  • Practice in Reading

Age: 5 and up

Preparation: The child has worked with the Adverb exercise.

Presentation:

  • Invite the child for the lesson, to take the box to the table.

  • Remove the cards and separate into a pile by color

  • Have the child read the red cards one at a time and lay them vertically down the table.

  • Take an orange card, and place it to the right of the top red card.

  • Explain that you both will find good combinations. Have the child read it left to right.

  • Ask to see if they make sense.  If the child thinks so, the card stays. Take another and repeat starting as close to the top of the line as there is a spot available. If not, move it down to the next red card and repeat.

    • If the child determines it doesn’t go with any, place off to the right

  • Fade and observe.

  • When all are placed, have the child identify which column told them what they could do. Child places the symbol.

  • Ask the child which column tells how you can do it.  Have the child place the symbol.

  • Mix the orange cards for the child to do again. Perhaps they will find different matches.

Control of Error: None, the child’s logic rules

Following Exercises:

  • Adverbial Phrases:  The child creates adverbial phrases using the Moveable Alphabet making the verb one color and the adverb another color or on paper.

  • Adverbial Phrases with the Cards:

    • Have the child select one verb card.  Ask the child to use the stack of orange cards to see how many can go with it.

    • Place an orange card on the right and then the left. Take another orange card, place it on the right and have the child read the three cards, then move it to the left and read.

    • The child selects where they want it (if not slide it away).
