Function of Words: Logical Adjective Game
Materials:
Box containing:
10 black cards with a noun written on each one
10 blue cards with an adjective written on each one. Each one will make sense with at least one of the nouns.
The box of grammar symbols
Purposes:
To help the child become aware that there can be more than one adjective for each noun.
To help the child become aware of the position of adjectives.
To help the child become aware of the words they are reading.
Preparation for future work in grammar.
Practice in Reading.
Age: 4 ½ and up
Preparation: The child has worked with the Adjective Exercise.
Presentation:
Invite the child for the lesson, to take the box to the table.
Remove the cards and separate into a pile by color
From the black stack, have the child read a card and place it at the top center of the table.
Child will continue reading and placing all black cards in a column.
Take a blue card, place to the left of the top black card.
Explain that you both will find good combinations. Have the child read it left to right.
Ask to see if they make sense. If the child thinks so, the card stays. Take another and repeat starting as close to the top of the line as there is a spot available. If not, move it down to the next black card and repeat.
If the child determines it doesn’t go with any, place off to the right
When the cards are all placed, ask the child to place the triangle over the column of names. Repeat for the column that tells us what kind of.
Mix the blue cards and invite the child to find new combinations.

Following Exercises:
Writing Phrases: The child can write descriptive phrases with the Moveable Alphabet with the adjective in one color and the noun in another.
Making Descriptive Phrases with the Cards
Have the child pick a noun from the stack of cards. Ask the child to use the stack of blue cards to find how many of the adjectives could go with the one noun.
Place a blue card next to the black, it the child thinks it goes with the noun, leave it on the table in place (if not slide it out of the way) and repeat creating a long string of adjectives in front of the noun
Have the child place symbols for each card.
Long Descriptive Phrases: The child writes a long phrase with many adjectives and a noun using the Moveable Alphabet.
