How to Mark Out an Ellipse
*This is most easily done with two adults when the classroom is empty.
Determine the size of the ellipse according to your space such that a child walking with arms outstretched would touch nothing. Some small furniture can be moved to allow a larger space if necessary, but keep in mind that it is best if the line can be available at all times for individual work. Small items, such as tables, chairs and floor rugs can go inside the line.
Measure the long axis of the ellipse with a length of string. Secure each end with tape.
2. Measure the short axis of the ellipse with another length of string. Secure each end with tape.
3. First, measure the long axis of the ellipse with a length of new string but do not secure it (this is the dashed line in the diagram). Then, pull the center of the string to the end of one of the short axes. Reposition the ends of the new string on the long axis so they are straight and secure. It is best to have two people with you to hold the ends but tape will do in a pinch.
4. Place a piece of chalk tight against the center of the repositioned second string and begin to draw the arc of the ellipse stopping at the bottom axis.
5. Continue in this way until you have completed the ellipse. Remove the strings and you are done!
