Pouring Water

Materials:

  • Tray

  • 2 identical pitchers

  • One of the pitchers is filled 2/3 full with water

  • A small drying cloth or sponge that is color coded

Following exercises:

  • Bucket

  • Underlay

  • A variety of pitchers, glasses, and containers

  • Various colored trays and sponges or small drying cloths

  • Funnel

Purposes:

  • Independence

  • Visual Motor Coordination

  • Preliminary Exercise

Age: 3 - 4

Preparation: Dry pouring.

Presentation:

  • Invite one child for a lesson on pouring.

  • Show the child the materials, how to pick up and carry the tray, return it to the shelf and allow the child to bring it to a table.

  • Sit to the child’s right and explain what you will do.

  • Move the sponge off of the tray.

  • With your left hand grasp the handle of the left pitcher and place your right fingertips on the front of the pitcher to support it. 

  • Lift the pitcher keeping your elbows in.

  • Move it over the pitcher, hovering 1-1 ½ inches from the top, and slowly begin to pour.

  • When it is empty, wait for the last drop, straighten the pitcher, and silently set it back down on the tray.

  • With your right-hand grasp the handle of the right pitcher, support the front with the left and repeat pouring in the same manner.

  • When it is empty, straighten the pitcher and silently set it back down on the tray.

  • Wipe the spout and sides of the pitcher.

  • Lift the pitchers from the tray and wipe any spilled water. 

  • Invite the child.

  • Fade and observe.

Points of Interest:

  • Pouring into the center of the opening of the other pitcher.

  • Looking for spills cleaning them up.

  • Waiting for the last drop.

  • Pouring to a single glass

  • Pouring into two identical glasses

  • Pouring from handleless pitchers.

  • Pouring from a greater height.

  • Pouring water into three glasses that differ in size.

  • Pouring water into glasses that are of the same height but have different diameters.

  • Pouring water into several glasses the same size but marked at different levels.

  • Pouring water in vases with a narrow neck using a funnel.  

  • Pouring from a teapot into a teacup and saucer.

  • Pouring from a pitcher into a bowl.

Pedagogical Notes:

  • When the children tire of the easier version of this exercise, change it to a more challenging one.

  • When you are shopping for pitchers look for a pointy spout.
